Inaugural Address: The inaugural address was delivered by Chief Guest Shree Banshidhar Tiwari, who set the tone with a compelling discourse on Climate Resilient Tourism and the value of Local Materials. He emphasised the wisdom in traditional construction practices, noting how earlier generations built climate-responsive homes that harmonised with nature and ensured comfort through passive design. He cited an 800-year-old structure still functioning efficiently—needing no artificial heating or cooling—as a powerful example.
Shree Tiwari urged a revival of vernacular techniques that prioritise sustainability, thermal comfort, and minimal resource use, especially in ecologically sensitive areas like Uttarakhand. Reflecting on traditional water conservation methods, he stressed the need for mindful resource usage and a legacy of responsibility. He called on architects and designers to lead by example—embracing local materials and traditional methods—to shape a future where built environments respect both heritage and nature.
Welcome Address: Ar. Gaurav Singh warmly welcomed guests and attendees, setting the stage for an inspiring 14th edition of the Smart Design Conclave & Awards – Dehradun Chapter. He expressed gratitude to architects, designers, industry experts, and students for their presence, highlighting the importance of such platforms in fostering collaboration and dialogue within the design community.
He outlined the evening’s well-curated agenda, which balanced knowledge sharing, innovation, and celebration. Highlights included a thought-provoking panel discussion, a keynote on sustainable and context-sensitive design, and six Pecha Kucha presentations by selected architects and designers. Attendees also explored material innovation showcases featuring the latest in building materials and technologies. With this roadmap, Ar. Singh effectively set the tone for a vibrant and engaging evening.
Reviving Vernacular Architecture in Uttarakhand
As architecture increasingly embraces sustainability and cultural authenticity, the challenge remains: how can regional identity be preserved while integrating modern construction innovations? Addressing this, the Smart Design Conclave & Awards – Dehradun Chapter hosted a compelling panel on “Reviving Vernacular Architecture in Uttarakhand through Fusion of Modern & Traditional Materials.” The session brought together leading voices committed to contextually grounded, climate-responsive, and culturally resonant design.
Moderated by Ar. Manish Kala of Edifice Design Studio, Dehradun—who has led architectural projects across Uttarakhand for over two decades—the discussion emphasised the need to balance traditional wisdom with contemporary systems, keeping ecology and regional relevance at the forefront. Panellists offered diverse perspectives shaped by their work in Uttarakhand and beyond:
Ar. Arun Goel of Consultancy Archiplan emphasised how Himalayan architecture responds naturally to its environment using materials like stone, mud, and timber—techniques that remain relevant today. Ar. K C Kuriyal of K C Kuriyal & Associates, known for restoring Garhwali temple architecture, advocated for deeper involvement of local artisans and cost-effective traditional practices.
Ar. Ashish Mohan of Dwellers Architects focused on eco-sensitive design strategies like passive solar heating and natural ventilation—long embedded in vernacular systems but now enhanced by modern tools. Ar. Malvika Ahuja of Malvika Ahuja Architects highlighted the need to reintroduce traditional knowledge in design education and stressed sustainability as a key practice in contemporary architecture.
Shree Banshidhar Tiwari, Vice Chairman, MDDA, shared valuable insights from an administrative and policy perspective. He highlighted the urgent need for regulatory frameworks and government-backed incentives to promote regionally appropriate construction, especially in ecologically sensitive zones like the Himalayan region. He strongly advocated for reviving sustainable vernacular practices to safeguard both the environment and cultural heritage.
Expanding the conversation beyond architecture, Shree Tiwari reflected on broader lifestyle changes that reveal a growing disconnect from nature and community. He cited the example of making rotis directly on open flames—once common, now associated with serious health risks like cancer—as a case for re-examining traditional practices. He also spoke about how modern life has diluted our culture of hospitality and family bonding, reminding us of the deeper values rooted in traditional living.
Ar. Vivek Aeron of V-Designs illustrated how traditional forms can coexist with modern materials, creating culturally resonant yet comfortable spaces. Ar. Anupam Nayak of Nayak Nayak’s Associates championed contextual design as a narrative of place, encouraging minimalism, longevity, and authenticity.
Youngest on the panel, Ar. Suryamani Chauhan of Des-K Art & Architecture, shared how vernacular techniques like dry stone masonry can be innovatively applied in new-age hospitality and residential design.
The session concluded with a unified message: the future of architecture in Uttarakhand lies in marrying modern innovation with rooted, vernacular traditions. Supporting craftspeople, reimagining local materials, and crafting region-specific regulations are essential steps toward a resilient and responsible architectural future.
Reinterpreting Responsible, Respectful, & Responsive Design
The keynote at SDCA Dehradun was delivered by the acclaimed Ar. Vistasp Bhagwagar of AVA Design Pvt. Ltd., renowned for his philosophical and context-driven design ethos. His address on “Reinterpretation of Responsible, Respectful, and Responsive Architecture Today” captivated both young architects and veterans alike. Using a selection of his signature projects from India and abroad, Ar. Bhagwagar illustrated how architecture can be a powerful vehicle for cultural sensitivity and environmental consciousness.
His presentation delved beyond aesthetics, offering a compelling exploration of how site, community, and climate influence design. Each project underscored his belief that architecture must serve people while respecting its surroundings. His diverse portfolio—from institutional campuses to boutique hotels and homes—highlighted the need for re-evaluating modern design practices in light of challenges like climate change and resource scarcity. The near-hour-long session left the audience with a vital message: architecture must transcend function to embody responsibility, cultural respect, and human-centric responsiveness to remain relevant and inspiring.
Pecha Kucha: Spotlight on Emerging Voices
One of the most engaging segments at SDCA Dehradun was the Pecha Kucha series, where six emerging professionals from the region showcased their work in a fast-paced, visual storytelling format. Designed to spotlight young talent, the segment gave architects and designers a platform to present their ideas, projects, and vision for the future with clarity and brevity.
Ar. Magali Rastogi opened with ‘Climate & Context – Appropriate Detailing’, demonstrating how responsiveness to local climate and context informs design decisions. Ar. Animesh Aggarwal followed with ‘Designing by Doing’, advocating for hands-on processes that move beyond the drawing board for more intuitive outcomes.
Ar. Rohan Oberoi focused on integrating nature into homes, dissolving boundaries between inside and outside, while Ar. Dhruv Batra offered a critical lens on current urban practices, urging low-impact, future-proof approaches.
Ar. Swati Negi shared her foothill-based projects rooted in eco-sensitive design emphasising harmony with nature, and Dr. Aanchal Sharma concluded the session with her research on Building Envelope Retrofitting through green roofs, offering a practical, sustainability-driven retrofit solution.
This energetic series stood out as a highlight, offering original ideas, grounded methods, and fresh perspectives that left the audience inspired.
