Decoding 5 Interior Design Styles That Everyone Talks About

In today’s social media era, where every life decision is influenced by pictures, it’s almost impossible not to draw inspiration from the world when designing your home. Thanks to Pinterest and other design apps, everyone now plays designer, leaving no stone unturned in the quest for perfect home interiors. But just because you’ve double-tapped it on Instagram doesn’t mean you actually know its name or the meaning of that interior style. Ever heard of Japandi, Wabi Sabi, Scandinavian? Well, these aren't just buzzwords, but design philosophies with rich histories and distinct aesthetics. So, before you scroll, swoon, and save, let's put a name and meaning to the beautiful interior design styles gaining popularity.

Scandinavian

As the name suggests, this interior design style draws its soul from the cool, simple, and effortless charm of countries like Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Norway. With sleek yet elegant furniture, spaces that breathe, and an unmissable cozy vibe, Scandinavian has caught the designers' attention around the globe. The philosophy behind is minimalism, neutral tones like beige, white, and grey. All its designs have a soft, light-filled aesthetic we can’t help but screenshot. It’s functional, it’s chic, and it’s basically a masterclass in making ‘less’ look like so much more.

Wabi-Sabi

Sounds like some kind of sushi dip, this is one of the Japanese styles of interior design. Going by the philosophy of finding perfection in imperfections, this genre flaunts rough and rustic textures with pride. It features unfinished looks, earthy tones and materials like clay, stone, weathered wood and more. Furniture with uneven edges, concrete walls, pottered figurines and flooring are some of the signature elements of this interior design style. Wabi-Sabi is for those who prefer soul over symmetry, magic over mundane and stories over showroom shine.

Japandi

As per the name, one would wonder that it's something related to Japan. Well, yes, it is a mix of Japanese and Scandinavian design style. In easy words if Scandinavian interiors had a calm, zen-loving cousin from Japan, Japandi would be it. This style is a mix of Nordic functionality and Japanese minimalism including sleek finish, practicality, minimalism and calm vibes. The colour palatte has all the muted tones with hues of greys, whites and browns. What sets this style apart is the low-slung seating, some indoor plants to add life to the space and floor mats aka Tatami mats.

Boho

Short for Bohemian, Boho style is known for its carefree, artistic and nomadic charm layered with colourful throws, bold wall tapestries, tasseled rugs and more. It reflects more of a free-spirited vibe and the objects are usually sourced from flea markets and are handicrafts. The entire flavor of this interior design style  is not bound by one country, rather it draws inspirations from Morocco, India, Africa etc. It abides by the philosophy of 'Forget the rules and let it flow.'

Mediterranean

Mediterranean style is influenced from coastal Europe like Italy, Spain and Greece. The design language here is vibrant, rustic and textured with terracotta tiles, arched doorways, printed upholstery. Every corner of a traditional Mediterranean home is sun soaked, rustic and airy. This full-of-character interior style has an old world charm to it which makes it stand out among all the new age designs styles. It’s perfect for those who want their home to feel like a warm embrace, not a cold made-up showroom.
