The Kamala cafe, is more than just a place to eat. It's a self-sustaining venture backed by SEWA Foundation. It uplifts and empowers women by improving their work as well as quality of life.
This cozy cafe in the heart of Ahmedabad has been helmed by Studio Praxis. This project was envisioned as a seamless dialogue between nature and organic architecture, culminating in a striking silhouette crafted with yellow sandstone. The main idea was to restore the lost connection of nature, soil and people again. The vibe of the place is truly welcoming and with the harmonious blend of natural elements, the space instantly brightens the mood of anyone who walks in.
Journey
“The design intends to look like a fraction of art, experienced and interpreted in different ways to be remembered”, explains the Artist and Architect Maneesh Kumar. The noisy and chaotic roads of Ahmedabad lead to this calmingly beautiful narrow textured stone trails towards the cafe. Walls of varying sizes, combined with the rugged texture of raw stone structures, create a sense of organic imperfection.
The centre of attention is the Gulmohar tree which stand tall in the middle of the courtyard. It brings a sense of calm and stillness to the entire space.
Material
The most challenging part was to build the structure in a minimum possible budget. Combined with nature-inspired shades, the materials express a rich contrast of brightness and depth, strength and delicacy, texture and tone.
The yellow walls were strategically built to play with sunlight, casting dynamic and intriguing shadow patterns. On the other hand, the concrete channel supported by the walls and metal frames, serves as a defining feature that unifies the overall structure.
The spatial experience of spaces
Offering a blend of cozy informal and refined formal dining, the space is complemented by a kitchen focused on organic, wholesome food rooted in nature. The area has an open plan with a dining space which is surrounded by nature. Overall, helmed with raw sandstone walls and a metal roof this cafe fosters a deep connection to nature. There are several levels created starting right from the entrance leading straight to the dining area.
A cure informal casual seating invites people from all age groups, especially youth, to come here and relax. Youngsters show up to spend a comfy time here over a cup of tea.
As we're speaking of the space's connection with nature, the flooring has been kept in its original form to give a sense of organic feeling and rawness.
As morning light hits the wall, it transforms into a canvas of dramatic shadows and intricate patterns, thanks to its thoughtful design. This structure inspires people to take a break from their fast urban life and connect with natural life.
