World Architecture Day 2025 is here, and just like every year, this time too, the first Monday of October is marked as the special day for architects. Today, everyone is celebrating the power of design, construction and development. This year's theme is: Design for Strength which focuses on creating built environments that can withstand climate change, adjust to new technologies and have the strength to recover.
Therefore, in context with the topic, we at Building Material Reporter explored how this idea resonates within the Indian context. As our country is one of the fastest growing economies in the world which has a significant contributions from the construction industry be it skyscrapers, structures or other infrastructural development. In order to highlight the overall impact of architecture in an economy, a few big names from the world of architecture have shared their thoughts and opinions with us on: 'The Role of Iconic Buildings and Architects in Economic Development'
Architects’ Perspectives
Ar. Sanjay Singh, Director, Arcop Associates Pvt. ltd, Delhi
Ar. Sanjay Singh highlighted the role of famous structures in shaping the country's identity and economy. Citing examples of buildings like Bharat Mandapam, a landmark in Delhi, he said, "These buildings are not just structures; they are catalysts for economic development." Stating how a single project can give a push to regional economic growth, Singh further shared the example of a convention center project in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. He said, "This project became a nucleus for economic activity, creating jobs and attracting investments.
Ar. Rudraksh Charan, Principal Architect, 42mm Architecture, Delhi
Ar. Rudraksh Charan cited that buildings have a significance in improving the economic growth of India. He said, "They (buildings) enhance real estate value, attract tourism, and become nodes around which cities expand." He further mentioned about the historic temples like Meenakshi Temple in Madurai and how it has become the region's religious, cultural, and economic growth for centuries due to tourism. He said, "The temple was built in stone, while the surrounding houses were perishable. Over time, it became the heart of the city's economy."
Ar. Hitesh Modi, Founder, Modi Srivastava & Associates, Vadodara
Talking about the architecture of today, Ar. Hitesh Modi drew attention on making design choices responsibly. He said, "Architecture today goes beyond creating buildings, it builds culture, economy, and identity. Every design choice can spark transformation, from empowering local artisans to promoting sustainable materials and energy-efficient solutions."
He further added, that architects of India are not only building structures but are also contributing in the economy. "In India, architects are becoming catalysts of inclusive growth, reviving heritage, shaping smarter cities, and creating opportunities through design. Our work doesn’t just define skylines; it strengthens the nation’s economic and social fabric, building a more responsible and imaginative India."
