A Sneak Peek Into Navi Mumbai International Airport Inaugurated by PM Modi

Mumbai added another feather to its cap by inaugurating the much-anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport. The first terminal which is designed to accommodate 90 million passengers annually was launched by PM Modi on October 8th. Expressing his happiness he said that now it would be easier for the farmers of Maharashtra to trade with foreign countries. He was quoted saying, “In 2014, we only had 74 airports. Today, we have more than 160.

Built in a budget of 19,650 crore, this is India's largest greenfield airport project. It is developed under a joint public-private partnership between the Adani Group who owns its 74% and CIDCO with 26%.

The airport was ideated to reduce the traffic of Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport which is one of Asia's busiest airports. BOM sees a yearly passenger range of about 54 Million making it difficult for authorities to manage. When the construction of the Navi Mumbai International Airport will finally be complete, it will have four terminals which will operate simultaneously.

Design and construction

The airport has been designed by Dubai's Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) in 1,160 hectares in Ulwe. It has been made on a theme of Lotus, India's national flower. The terminal's ceiling is specially designed with steel-and-glass giving it a floating sculptural look of petals. Apart from aesthetically pleasing design, this first phase is equipped with all the necessary facilities like 88 check-in counters, four gates which can be expanded later, travelators, food courts, shopping stores etc. The overall look of the airport exudes positive vibes while celebrating the project's grandeur.

Connectivity

The Navi Mumbai International Airport is just 37 KMs away from South Mumbai making it easier for people to connect to the place. It is designed to become a modern transport hub with smooth road and rail connectivity in Mumbai. Moreover, the government has planned to connect it to the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport with an upgraded railways and highway network.

Inauguration by PM Modi

The grand celebration of inaugurating the airport kickstarted with Prime Minister's aircraft landing at the airport. He reviewed the entire terminal before addressing the people. Along with Navi Mumbai International Airport, PM Modi even launched the phase 2B of the underground Mumbai Metro Line-3.

The entire project is launched for the ever evolving and never sleeping city of Mumbai to make the basic transportation of people more comfortable and easy. Real-estate, development, and land investments were also a part behind this vision.
