Manthan: Discuss. Debate. Design.
Manthan on Escaping Reality or Enhancing Virtual Influence? The discussion delved into the growing fascination with the virtual world and its increasing impact on the design process in the physical realm. Moderated by Ar. Rahul Dalvi of Dalvi Associates, the session was structured as a thought-provoking debate between two ideologically distinct groups—pro real and pro virtual. Representing the pro real perspective were Ar. Ashish Amin of S3D, Ar. Dharam Patel of Art & Architecture Associates, and Ar. Dexter Fernandes of Uneven, who advocated for the enduring value of tangible, hands-on design rooted in materiality and spatial experience. On the opposing side, the pro virtual team featured Ar. Karamvir Ghatge of Karamvir Ghatge & Associates, Ar. Nimesh Shah of S3D, Ar. Abhay Panchasara of Fifth Column Design Studio, and Ar. Tushar Parikh of Tushar Parikh & Associates, who championed the advantages of digital tools, virtual modelling, and immersive technology in shaping futuristic design thinking.
The debate sparked compelling viewpoints around the balance between technology and tradition. The pro real group emphasised the irreplaceable essence of physical engagement with space, natural materials, and human-centric design, cautioning against over-reliance on digital mediums. Meanwhile, the pro virtual architects highlighted how virtual platforms enhance visualisation, streamline processes, and enable greater creative freedom, especially during conceptual stages. A key takeaway from the discussion was the emerging consensus that while virtual tools are becoming indispensable in modern practice, their true power lies in complementing—not replacing—the real-world essence of architectural creation. The session ultimately encouraged designers to seek a harmonious integration of both realms to enrich the future of design.
