It's a good and proud news for all the Indians as we have become the third largest country in the world to generate solar energy. Yes, recently, Union Minister for Coal and Mines Prahlad Joshi shared the information with everyone. He took to his social media handle and also thanked PM Modi. On his X account he tweeted saying, "Thanks to the visionary leadership of PM @narendramodi ji, India is leading the way in the global clean energy revolution"
As per the data of International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), India has even left Japan behind as it has produced 1,08,494 GWh solar power while the latter has generated 96,459 GWh.
This is a major achievement as India is trying to set the target of generating 500 GW non-fossil fuel based electricity by 2030.
For the unversed, IRENA is a global organisation that helps countries make a shift towards sustainable energy. It even acts as a hub for global collaboration, offering guidance, research, and insights on clean energy technologies, policies, and funding strategies.
The government aims India to emerge as a global leader in solar energy by scaling up both rooftop and utility-scale solar projects.
Over the last 10 years, various programs and initiatives have been implemented like the National Solar Mission.
India’s solar energy increase has also been supported by reduced prices of solar panels, better manufacturing facilities and foreign investments. Big states of the countries such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka among others are the biggest solar power producers of India.
Apart from this, India's promise to climate goals under the Paris Agreement has further acted as a push to the sustainable energy generation. By achieving the third spot globally, India is now contributing significantly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable development.
