Tata Trusts Small Animal Hospital- All You Need To Know About This ‘Pet’ Project

One of India's largest business magnates and philanthropists, Ratan Tata, has started a cutting-edge animal hospital in Mumbai, realizing a long-held dream. At a projected cost of Rs 165 crore, this 2.2 acre pet hospital will be the largest pet hospital in India.

The pet healthcare system in India is still in its infancy. Only a small number of veterinary clinics with superior facilities and infrastructure exist nationwide to provide pet care. Additionally, there is a dearth of high-quality, standardized care. Ratan Tata's new hospital seeks to address these problems. The hospital is scheduled to open in March and will be unique among the few 24-hour facilities in India that can accommodate dogs, cats, and rabbits.

Ratan Tata had this dream- Tata Trusts Small Animal Hospital- after struggling to find a suitable veterinary facility for his own injured pet. He became a fervent supporter of the construction of top-notch animal hospitals in Mumbai as a result of the encounter.

Thomas Heathcote, a British veterinarian, will serve as the hospital's director. It is a four-story building in Mahalakshmi, Mumbai, with a ground floor. For training purposes, it has partnered with five UK veterinary colleges, including the Royal Veterinary College London. The hospital will have 200 patient beds and offer multidisciplinary care in addition to surgical, diagnostic, and pharmacy services.

Ahead of the inauguration of the Tata Trusts Small Animal Hospital in Mahalaxmi, Ratan Tata said, "A pet is no different from a member of one's family today. As the guardian of several pets throughout my life, I recognise the need for this hospital."

Tata's dream is almost a reality in 2024, despite a number of challenges. Under Tata's direction, the veterinary hospital, which will rank among the biggest in India, will be the newest gem in the Tata Trusts crown. The Trusts have previously constructed the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, CPA, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, and Tata Memorial Hospital—India's first cancer care hospital.

The brand chose to relocate the Tata veterinary hospital to a central location after realizing that pet parents in Mumbai would have long commutes. The hospital had originally been planned in Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai as a result of a land deal with the state government in 2017. This distance could have been a big turnoff for pet parents, particularly for those who needed emergency care.

In light of this, obtaining authorization and locating suitable land were additional delays, according to Tata.

It will also have a special facility for the welfare of stray dogs that will be managed by a non-profit organization.
