Delhi NCR has been under the radar due to severely deteriorating air quality in the region. Therefore, in order to tackle the same, the
Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has instructed Noida Authority to put a strict ban on selective construction activities.
As per the official statement of the government body, projects like metro, hospitals, airports, defence, sanitation, flyovers are allowed to resume under the rules of dust and waste management. Whereas all the other construction works will come to a halt.
Apart from that, demolition of buildings, ready-mix concrete (RMC) plants, stone crushers etc which are expected to increase the pollutants in the air have been shut down until further notice. This is Stage-III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) implemented to battle the rising AQI levels which went way beyond the reading of 400.
What is Graded Response Action Plan?
The Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) is a framework with a set of emergency measures, designed specially for Delhi-NCR to tackle the rising air pollution. It has three stages where, Stage I stands for 'Poor', Stage II is 'Very Poor', Stage III is 'Severe', and Stage IV 'Severe+'. This depends on the AQI levels of the area.
What is the link between construction and pollution?
For the unversed, construction is linked with pollution. According to United Nations Environment Programme, The buildings and construction sector is by far the largest emitter of greenhouse gases, which add 37% of global emissions.
