Varanasi Ropeway: The Switzerland Connection Behind India’s Latest Urban Marvel

The much-awaited ropeway project of Varanasi is the country's first urban transport ropeway. It is very different and far more advanced than other ropeway facilities across the nation. It promises to bring numerous benefits and smooth flow of traffic in the holy city. 

It was pitched to the people as an alternative and economical mode of transport connecting multiple destinations in Varanasi including the renowned Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Dashashwamedh Ghat. Costing a total of Rs. 645 crore, this architecture marvel will cover the ariel distance of 4.2 kms. It will reportedly start on December 12, 2025. 

Varanasi Ropeway's Swiss Link

Designed by Creative Group LLP, this is one of the most high-tech projects of the city. It is equipped with sensors which thoroughly keep a track of the ropeway’s safety and performance. It even monitors cable tension and gondola movement which is very important for the smooth functioning of the ropeway. 

And since the ropeway uses a Swiss-made monitoring system, all such details will be sent to the experts based in Switzerland who can remotely access the sensor data and fix technical issues remotely if needed. So far, a total of 228 sensors have been installed in 38 towers.

Features of Varanasi Ropeway

The ropeway will have a total of 220 cable cars operating at 45 meters above ground level. Each cabin will offer a panoramic view of the city’s bustling streets and ghats below giving the passengers a surreal travel experience.

It is a cost-sharing project, which includes 50% funding from the central government while 20% from the state. The government assures that the ropeway is not only an affordable but sustainable transportation option. Since it’s built on towers, it doesn't require land to run, and unlike road transportation the ropeway doesn't leave much carbon footprint.

The ropeway projects comes with multiple benefits like improved accessibility, especially to important places like Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Dashashwamedh Ghat. This service will save time and cost for the tourists as it is cheaper and faster than other modes of transport.

The ropeway which can also carry goods, will reduce the city's traffic congestion on roads. Over all, this ambitious project is expected to pave the way for more advanced public transport solutions in India.
